Degoogling the Pixel 8: Installing IodeOS -- It's really this easy!

Tuesday, November 25, 2025

Markabilly shared the installation of IodeOS over a Jitsi meeting and recorded it to share with everybody.

Our mission at ACTC is to champion freedom by curating, supporting, and financing projects centered around privacy, decentralization, and anti-censorship technologies, fostering a world unrestrained by digital suppression. So privacy is in our mission statement and we believe that it is also a prerequisite for fighting censorship.

Why should you degoogle an Android with Iode?

  • Google is evil.
  • Neither Android nor iOS respect privacy, stock phones are data-collection devices.
  • Iode has privacy enhancements over vanilla LineageOS.
  • Iode includes microG, which allows more “normie” apps to operate.

By going to https://iode.tech/ and making your way to Official Supported Devices at https://iode.tech/iodeos-official-supported-devices/, you can see which phones can easily be loaded with IodeOS and which features are working on those phones.

Generally speaking, the best options, with full compatibility and being able to lock the bootloader after flashing, are the Pixel phones listed and Rob Braxman’s (https://rumble.com/c/robbraxman) Brax3 phone.

When choosing and buying one of the phones on the list to degoogle it, be very careful to buy exactly the model numbers listed, so that this will work. Also, you’ll want to check with the seller to ensure that your phone is not carrier-locked and that the bootloader is unlockable. The latter is found under Developer Options, which are enabled by going to About Phone and tapping the Build Number seven times.

Of course, you can also choose to buy a phone directly from Iode with IodeOS preloaded, but we chose to load our own and Iode has a loader that makes this a very simple process. You won’t have to learn ADB and Fastboot commands to complete this process, as it’s almost fully automatic!

When you have a phone and are ready to go, go to the Installation page at https://iode.tech/installation/, you’ll see options to download the installer for either Windows or Linux. Download and run the appropriate installer, and simply follow the instructions. It’s really that easy! Markabilly’s demonstration is performed under Linux Mint on his daily-use computer.
